Orchids

This beautiful cattleya Blc. Chunyeah 'Tzeng Wen'  is one of our many orchids in bloom.

Long a symbol of the elite and exotic, orchids today can be bought everywhere from Home Depot to Safeway. That has fertilized huge growth in the orchid market by the average consumer. The orchid industry has undergone a great deal of change in this decade. With this huge market demand, bundled with better growing technology and large selection of year round blooming orchids, the orchid plant has emerged as the number one floral product.

People are learning that orchids are not the delicate plants that they were perceived to be but are hardy, easy-to-maintain plants that have the ability to bloom all year long," said Lee Cooke, executive director of the American Orchid Society.

Orchid is the most complicated, highly-evolved plants on Earth. More than 30,000 different species flower in the wild on every continent by Antarctica. They range from the achingly beautiful to the truly weird- looking orchids While orchid buyers can be young, old, male or female, they all seem to develop a lifelong love affair with these exotic plants. For some, the attraction is the deliciously sweet fragrance of an orchid in bloom. For others the mystique is embodied in the contrast between an orchids whisper thin, delicate petals and its vibrant colors, from the purest white to the deepest maroon. Still others are smitten by the variety of artistic or geometric shapes and unique patterns embodied in the orchid plant's blossoms.

Orchids popularity is growing fast in the US. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Floriculture Crops Survey for the year 2002, compiled by the National Agricultural Statistics Survey, orchids are growing in popularity in the United States. Currently second in potted flowering plant sales at $121 million in reported wholesale sales, orchid sales increased by nine percent this past year. This is the highest percentage increase of all the potted flowering plants in the category. Orchids are second behind poinsettias, which experienced a 10 percent decrease with $252 million in sales, and they are significantly ahead of third-ranked chrysanthemums, which decreased nine percent to $76 million in sales.

We specialize in easy to grow and frequent blooming orchids. Our cattleya orchid, dendrobium orchid, oncidinae orchid and vanda orchids are ideal for beginners.

Other orchid generas such as Miltonopsis, Pahaenopsis and Specie orchids are more suitable for intermediate growers.
